It may seem easy to change your refrigerator water filter every 6 months. However, you should always follow correct instructions for installation. If something usual happens after the replacement, here are troubleshooting tips that may help you.
Leaking After Installation
Remove the fridge filter and re-fit it into the refrigerator with a sharp twist to lock into position. If this doesn’t work, O ring of the filter is broken. If you have a spare one, add silicone oil then replace it.
Refrigerator Not Dispensing Water
Sometimes when the water filter is not snapped in all the way, this may happen. If you are sure it is, test it with an old filter. If water still does not come out, it is probably the problem of the water valve leading to the refrigerator. If water comes of the old filter and not the new one, this often happens on Whirlpool Filter 1 edr1rxd1 and Whirlpool Filter 3 edr3rxd1 as the water outlet is broken or blocked. In this case, contact customer service for a replacement.
Dirty Water or Weird Taste & Odor
After replacing your filter, you may notice cloudy water coming out. They are actually activated carbon blocks that are filtered out. For example, you can see the picture below, water enters an inner chamber of the filter and is then filtered through the carbon and comes out clean on the other side. Sometimes, the filter may be jostled around, causing some particles of the carbon to be knocked loose. They are not hurtful but if you prefer not to drink it, you can flush your refrigerator water filter for about 5 minutes. Likewise, if you drink your refrigerator water without flushing it for a few minutes, you might also taste a weird smell from the water. They are not health concerns, too.
Noisy/Clunking Sound
If your refrigerator begins to make a noisy sound after the installation of a new filter, the filter, filter housing or water inlet valve could be the culprit. You can first try to flush water, eliminating bubbles. If this doesn’t work, check the water inlet valve. If the noise does not seem to come from the valve, check the filter housing.
Water Flow is Irregular
If this happens, there is likely still air in the lines. Press down the dispenser lever for 2 minutes until the water starts to flow freely.
